Proposal Development

The First Step in Writing a Successful Grant Proposal -- define your idea! A clearly defined and well-articulated project is most likely to obtain funding. Here are a few questions to help guide you as you hone in on your desired project.

Developing Your Message -- be persuasive! Why should a funder select your grant proposal? What about your project is unique or special? The following are some things to keep in mind as you develop the text of your proposal --

  • Focus on how your project will improve the education of students at SPPS
  • Follow the directions of the grant EXACTLY
  • Use active voice and avoid contractions
  • Spell check and edit for general grammatical errors

Plan for the Unexpected -- while it is challenging to predict the unexpected, below are several scenarios to consider as you attempt to plan for potential pitfalls --

  • Think about additional costs involved with your project. For example, your grant includes the cost for an Interactive White Board, yet it does not include funding for the installation of the board. Make sure to consider instillation costs for technology and facilities related grant proposals.
  • SPPS has many purchasing contract agreements for computers. At this time, district technology services cannot support any outside computer equipment (non Dell or Apple). Thus, we ask our staff to not pursue any grant that includes computers, laptops or similar equipment without prior approval from the Technology Department and Purchasing Office.
